Friends and followers of the YACCB,
The band started rehearsals for the summer concert series in January. Our theme this year came from the world of athletic competition around the globe - the 2024 Olympics in Paris. But instead of sports, we're preparing a world of music. The 2024 season will bring you Music Of Nations with many interesting and entertaining pieces from and about many of the countries of the world.
While the musicians are hard at work practicing the sounds you will hear, our events coordinator has been busy scheduling concerts. We have nine concerts already, with a couple more in the works. These will include our usual venues, like Boardman Park, Austintown Park, and the YSU Festival Of The Arts. We also have a couple special ones scheduled this year.
Remember the "special announcement in the Spring" from my last message to you? After our first concert in May at the St. Luke,s Church festival, we will be playing at one of the areas nicest concert settings - Mill Creek Park's Morley Pavilion. This concert is called Spring Into Giving, and it will feature our first outdoor concert with our friends and fellow community group, The Stambaugh Chorus. Like our December concert, this will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank. But unlike that concert, which is a monetary fund raiser, this concert will be a "food only" collection. The date is Sunday, June 2, at 3:00. With this being a special concert in a great venue, we will be doing something that not many groups have the opportunity to do - premier a piece of music, never played before!
During the last part of 2023 the president and the board, with the help of Joe Robinson, decided to have a piece commissioned by the YACCB. During a rehearsal in the fall, members of the band, through a special vote, gave the music a name. It will be called the Mahoning Valley March, composed by Steven Bulla. The musicians of the YACCB, through it's 41 year history, have come from the entire area - the Mahoning Valley. We think it's a perfect title and we're very proud to contribute to the history of the Youngstown area.
We will also be doing a joint concert with poetic authors of Lit Youngstown once again this season. The band will travel out of the area for two concerts this summer. One is our long standing performance in Mercer, PA, and the other is at the Wolf Creek Winery near Barberton. The YACCB will kick off a day full of community band performances to raise money to promote music education in our schools. We will host a visiting band at our annual "Music In The Park With Friends" concert, Boardman Park, July 28. The Cortland Community Band will perform at the concert starting at 4:00. As we have done recently, we will also play at the Mastropietro Winery Community Band festival, hosted by the Canfield Community Band. You can view all of our concert dates on this website. So it's the early spring - predicted by Punxsutawney Phil, and time to dust off your lawn chairs!
Come out to enjoy some great music this summer season with the YACCB, as we perform the sounds of other nations and the good old USA.
Joseph Pellegrini, Conductor
“To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable.”
― Aaron Copland
