Youngstown Area Community Concert Band
Most community band members know the name Robert W. Smith. His original works have been programmed by military, university, high school, middle school, and community bands around the world, including YACCB.
He worked with Lancaster High School Symphonic Band. He was a genius in teaching his concepts to this ace band. How privileged for these kids (future community band members) to learn under his tutalage!
Conductor Donna Morgan is given a Certificate of Appreciation after the concert by ACB President, Jerry Brubaker.
Jerry Brubaker is well-known for his many compositions and arrangements for concert bands. YACCB has played several of his pieces.
Of the many wonderful opportunities that are available to convention attendees is the chance to meet, watch, and talk to composers and arrangers.
Here is John de Meij, well-know Dutch composer, rehearsing his Symphony No. 1: Lord of the Rings with the host band. They delivered a brilliant performance of this great piece.
Rehearsals started on Thursday morning and continued on Friday and Saturday 8:30-11:30am. This was our first rehearsal with Conductor Donna L. Morgan, U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 3.
Mmmmm- that's a long way when you sit back there! Might explain some things.
And lest you think this is all work and no play, here are 3 of the 4 YACCB members enjoying good food and beyond-good company at our Friday night banquet.
Hopefully, more of our members will consider an ACB Convention in their future. Next year's convention, 2019 “Big Apple” will be held April 24-28, 2019 at Woodcliff Lake Hilton, Woodcliff Lake, NJ near New York City.
Photographs were taken by Niles Dening, a member of the host band, who has graciously given permission to post them here.
One of our selections was a Premier Performance of The Sword of Titan, commissioned for the ACB Convention 2018 by our hosts, The Buffalo Niagara Concert Band.
It was composed AND conducted by Rossano Galante, shown here. What a privilege to play under the baton of this well-known composer, and an even bigger thrill when we received a standing ovation.
The other selections we played were:
Included in this band are our own
Sarah Gustwiller, bass clarinet, 3rd row, 7th from right
Melissa Carrocce, flute, 2nd row, 3rd from right
Joy Cable, Flute, 1st row, 2nd from right
Ed Cable, tuba, last row, 2nd tuba from the right
What a great experience to play in this size band with musicians from all over the United States. Every year a featured guest conductor is chosen by the host band. These conductors are military, composers, or arrangers who are well-known to concert bands.
